General Qualifications for Non-Service Connected Aid and Attendance

While most Veterans are familiar with benefits if they were injured while in the service, many are not familiar with another Veteran Affairs (VA) benefit that can help them pay for medical assistance should they need it. This benefit is primarily known as “aid and attendance.” The funds can be used not only for nursing homes, or assisted living, but could be used to help pay for at home care.

There are many qualifications for this VA benefit, but at a minimum, the Veteran must have served at least 90 days of active duty, with one day during a time of war.

There is also a benefit for a surviving spouse if the spouse was married to a qualified Veteran when the Veteran passed away and the spouse has not remarried.
